Research conducted in 2012 investigated the effect of consumption of honey-bee bread mixture on hepatic function and blood parameters in alcohol abuse patients suffering from chronic hepatitis. The experiment involved 13 male and 5 female patients aging between 19-69.  Only eight patients were given 15 g raw honey and bee bread mixture twice a day in addition to the medical treatment for five weeks. The rest of the patients received only medical treatment.

The blood samples of patients were tested for erythrocytes, hemoglobin, leukocytes, C-reactive protein (CRP) glucose, and bilirubin, liver enzymes aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT). The results of the study demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in CRP, AST, bilirubin, and a trend towards a decrease in ALT levels in patients treated with medicines and raw honey and bee bread mixture. The scientists concluded that medical treatment, together with bee bread mixed with honey, exerted hepatoprotective effect and improved liver function.
