When summer arrives, many prefer using air conditioning, going to the sea, or swimming in the pool to escape the heat. However, these activities can carry certain infection risks. We must support our immune system to protect ourselves from these infection risks.

Air Conditioning-Related Infections: Air conditioning to escape heat is a common method during the summer. However, if the air conditioning is poorly maintained or not cleaned properly, it can become a suitable environment for the growth of many microorganisms. Therefore, it is essential to clean your air conditioning unit and change its filters regularly. Due to increased respiratory infections associated with air conditioning use in the summer, do not neglect consuming propolis. Propolis is an excellent immune support that can be consumed regularly throughout the year as it is a natural food.

Sea and Pool-Related Infections: Going to the sea or swimming in the pool is a great option to cool off during the summer. However, sea and pool water can cause certain infections. Especially if pool water is not adequately cleaned and disinfected, it can create a suitable environment for the growth of microorganisms. Similar to pools, there is also an infection risk with seawater. For example, a Vibrio vulnificus bacterium can be transmitted to individuals with open wounds in seas exposed to floodwaters. It can enter the body through skin wounds or open cuts and cause serious infections. To protect yourself from such bacteria, make sure to cover your open wounds and take a shower after swimming.

Additionally, regular consumption of propolis, which possesses antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties, supports the immune system and helps the body naturally defend itself against infections. A scientific study conducted in 2012 investigated the effect of propolis supplementation on upper respiratory tract infection in pediatric patients. Forty-one pediatric patients were administered a propolis supplement to evaluate its antimicrobial activity. According to the study results, children recovered in 2-5 days. Researchers suggested that propolis supplements prevent the growth of bacteria with their antimicrobial activity and help treat throat infections. It is recommended for adults to daily consume 20 drops and children to consume ten drops of an extract containing at least 10% pure Anatolian propolis to naturally support the body’s defense system against air conditioning, sea, and pool-related infections.
